MARIAN CENTER UPDATE...
The Administrative Team asked that I share the following
with you today. I hope you are doing well in your new
spaces and are enjoying the beauty of the change of seasons.
We want to share with you the news that we are sending out at this time. The following news release announces that we will be building a new convent on the grounds of the former Marian Center / St. Mary’s Academy. The sisters in assisted living and memory care
will be living there, and the administrative offices will also be
moving to the new building. The news release will give you additional background information.
May we ask for your prayerful support. This is a large undertaking with many facets, many questions to be answered, and many decisions to be made, but step by step, we are moving forward. Thank you for your interest in our future. We are grateful.
With a firm belief in God’s providence and abundant blessings,
Sisters Diana, Marcia and Sylvia Anne.
(St. Francis, Wis.) The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi will build a new convent on the site of the now closed Marian Center for Nonprofits, which originally was St. Mary’s Academy. The aging facility at 3195 South Superior Street, which closed this past summer, will be replaced by new construction which is being designed by Groth Design Group of Milwaukee.
After more than five years of working with consultants and studying the options, it was clear that it is neither practical nor economically viable to continue using the century-old Marian Center structure. In reviewing the current Motherhouse condition, it was also determined that this 1800s building is no longer suitable as a convent for the sisters who currently make it their home. Approximately 40 sisters presently live in small rooms, inadequate for elder care, on the third and fourth floors. This structure, which no longer meets the basic health and safety needs of the aging sisters, is also facing mounting maintenance costs. Additional sisters needing health care assistance live elsewhere in the Milwaukee area and out of state.
Faced with these realities, the sisters engaged consultants on finance, elder care and architecture, resulting in the decision to begin the process of building a new convent on the Marian Center location. Upon completion, it will provide living quarters for 80 sisters. The current Motherhouse offices will also be moved to this new building.
A start date for the construction has not yet been set.
